After purchasing their home off-plan in a small Norfolk village, the clients added an additional room before moving in — which unintentionally created a large, awkward outdoor space between the two parts of the property. Despite its size and south-facing position, the space was difficult to use.
In summer, the sun made it uncomfortable to sit outside, while in winter it became a wind trap. The brief was to transform this underused area into something practical, comfortable and usable throughout the year — effectively creating an additional room outdoors.
The clients had already explored multiple options and attempted to design a solution themselves but were unable to find something that truly worked.
Working closely with them, we translated their ideas into a fully considered design — creating a bespoke, enclosed garden room centred around the Renson Aero, a cantilevered louvered roof system. This allows for complete flexibility, offering protection from direct sun while also enabling the space to open up when desired.
Sliding Loggia panels were incorporated to enclose the structure while maintaining a clean, architectural finish and providing adjustable protection from wind and low sun — particularly in the evenings as the sun sets — without fully closing the space. Integrated heating ensures the space remains comfortable even in colder months, while the overall layout was carefully tailored to the proportions and orientation of the property.
An awkward, underused space transformed into a fully enclosed, flexible garden room — designed for year-round comfort and everyday living.
The finished structure has completely redefined how the space is used. What was once exposed and impractical is now a comfortable, sheltered environment that works in all seasons — whether enclosed in winter or opened up to the garden in summer.
It now functions as a true extension of the home, offering flexibility, comfort and control throughout the year.
